Mürren is a picturesque ski resort perched on the sunny mountain side on the west side of the Lütschine river. Located between 1600 and 3000 metres above sea level, Mürren-Schilthorn is the Bernese Oberland’s highest-altitude ski resort with snow guaranteed.
Mürren ski resort - Jungfrau ski area
The "Jungfrau" lift pass includes the areas of Grindelwald/First, Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen and Mürren/Schilthorn with a total of 211 kilometres of pistes. The three ski areas offer slopes to suit various tastes.
From October 1968 to May 1969, the Schilthorn was a pivotal film location for the iconic James Bond movie "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service". The revolving restaurant served as arch-villain Blofeld’s headquarters and was called Piz Gloria - a name it has kept to the present day. An interactive exhibition on the first floor of the summit centre addresses seven of the film’s key scenes and provides general background information such as a world map featuring all Bond locations.
Mürren-Schilthorn - skiing
The Mürren/Schilthorn ski area is best for strong intermediates and experts as many of the slopes are quite steep.
A funicular from the village takes you up to Allmendhubel where there's an easy run for beginners or you can take the lift which brings you up to Maulerhubel for the runs down to the restaurant at Winteregg. At Schiltgrat there's a choice of two lifts with a variety of runs for all grades of skier, firstly on open slopes and then through the woods. Here you will also find the Kanderhar run which is a steep black piste that will test your skills.
The Schilthorn at 2,970m is reached by a cable car up to Piz Gloria with its famous revolving restaurant. Those who are up for something more demanding must try the 14.9km long black Inferno run, the site of the first ever official down-hill ski race. There are different sections, some with jumps! With a total vertical drop of 2000m, the whole thing takes about 40 min. You can always take the cable car back down to Birg and enjoy the various runs on the sunny slopes on the Engental where there are three fast chair lifts. From Birg there is a run back to Mürren or you can also come back to the village by cable car.
Mürren village
The resort itself is a colourful mix of different wooden chalets, boutiques and hotels. Here you won’t find any concrete apartment blocks or hotel complexes as each property owner aims to make their accommodation or establishment as appealing to the eye as possible. Charming and cozy are often used to describe this unique ski resort.
Alpine sports centre, this renovated complex offers a huge range of activities in the resort as well as offering tourist advice and a ski shop. Indoors you can play tennis or squash or enjoy the pool with its Jacuzzi and children's area (free swim with your Mürren Guest Card issued at your hotel). There is also a lovely spa with wellness therapies and treatments, plus a series of saunas and steam rooms.
If you are looking for sophisticated nightlife then Mürren perhaps isn't for you but there's certainly a friendly après ski ambience to complement the pleasures of the ski slopes. Popular locales include the Bliemlichäller in the Hotel Blumental and the Tächi Bar in the Hotel Eiger. Both places provide a DJ, helping night owls transform into early birds. For amusing après-ski drinks try the Balloon Bar which is actually located inside of, you’ve guessed it, a hot-air balloon basket.
