Maria Alm is located in the middle of the majestic mountains of the Steinernes Meer, the Hochkönig, and the Pinzgau grass mountains. This town has the highest church tower in the state of Salzburg, and tradition and customs are an integral part of village life.
Hochkönig ski area
The ski resort of Maria Alm in Austria forms one end of the Hochkonig ski area, with Hinterthal and Dienten in the middle and Mulbach at the far Eastern end of the ski system.
The area is best for intermediate skiers and for beginners as there are also good nursery slope. Ski area has 120km of pistes that are a lot quieter than Austria’s well known and popular resorts, ideal for those looking for a more leisurely holiday.
At the top of Maria Alm’s Natrunbahn you can take the long, pretty ski back down or head on the other way to connect to the Hochkönig circuit. Down and then up, the skiing above Maria Alm reaches 1,900m at Aberg-Langeck where several short black pistes and various off-piste options provide a challenge in an area where most of the skiing is good, intermediate fare.
The Hochkönig mountain at nearly 2,000m runs in a ridge parallel to the ski slopes as they head east, tree-lined runs that dart down first into Hintermoos and Hinterthal (a long red from top to bottom with the option of switching to a black half way). From there, runs hop over the Gabuhel peak, Austrian skiing as you always imagine it, picturesque and safe for all the family. And, while this might be a largely unknown area, the lifts are all modern.
From here there are plenty more ups and downs – up to fabulous viewpoints and down through the trees – before arriving at the farthest point, the little town of Muhlbach. And then you get to do it all in reverse, everything looking different. And it’s perfect for families with blue runs available nearly all the way, save for a few easy reds.
Hochkönig snowpark
The ski area Hochkönig comprises 3 different great snow parks! The most coveted of them is probably the "Blue Tomato Kings Park". It is 1.8 km long and begins directly at the mountain station of the 8-person lift "Kings Cab". The set-up is impressive: boxes, butter boxes, jibs, kickers, rails and tubes, as well as Special Obstacles don't leave anything to be desired, no matter whether you are a beginner or pro.
Those who would like to take advantage of the whole range of freestyle offers, there are two further parks. The "Snowpark Natrun" at the Simmerl lift is characterized by easy obstacles and is geared more towards beginners or children. The "Livingroom Snowpark" in Mühlbach, located at an altitude of 1,500 m at the foot of the Mandlwände mountain, is freshly shaped every day and offers a challenging ride for everyone with its advanced and beginner lines.
Maria Alm Apres Ski
For a smallish resort village Maria Alm is actually quite lively. The Bachwirt and Dengl Alm are both lively and traditional bars. If you are looking for a quieter drink we suggest you check out the Orgler Keller. The Almer Tenne has live music and disco but Maria Alm is no St Anton, Kitzbuhel or Ischgl. So those looking for a thumping nightlife scene might be disappointed.
