Situated right at the very end of the Stubai Valley is the majestic Stubai Glacier. Its ski resort extends all the way up to 3,210 metres above sea level and is the largest glacier ski resort in Austria.
Here, high above the valley floor, the pistes are guaranteed to be in top condition from October all the way through until June.
Stubai Glacier ski area
Two modern gondolas are running in parallel from the base-station at Mutterbergalm (1.750m) to the first stage at Fernau (2.302m). From here, you can either continue towards the top-mountain stations Eisgrat (2.900m) or Gamsgarten (2.600m), where the trail for cross-country-skiers has been tended. The ski area combines five glaciers: "Eisjochferner", "Daunferner", "Fernauferner", "Windachferner" and "Gaiskarferner". ("Ferner" is the Austrian word for "glacier".)
Most of the slopes are "family"-runs, marked in blue and red.
Fans of more difficult tracks concentrate on recently open black runs, powder freaks turn to several ski routes (neither tended nor patrolled) with such illustrative names as "The Wall", "Fast Corner" or "Steep Glacier Tongue". The 10 kilometres "Wilde Grub'n"-trail is Austrias longest run from the top (3.150m) to the base of a ski-resort (1.750m). Permanent snow-making-facilities in its lower parts guarantee skiing to the bottom-station until late April.
Advanced and expert skiers will also find plenty to keep them entertained, including the 10km "Wilde Grube" descent down to the bottom of the cable cars.
The ski area directly by the village itself is small and only suited to beginners and early intermediates.
There are 9 marked ski routes in the area and 15 ‘Powder Department runs’. The 9 Ski routes are shown on the piste map with red dotted lines which are numbered.
