Valfréjus ski resort is located at about 1,550 m in the Savoy Alps near the Italian border. Opened in 1983, Valfréjus is one of the youngest resorts in France.
Valfréjus ski resort
The Valfréjus ski area is made up of 23 marked runs spread over some 70 kilometres and a vertical drop of 1187 metres, with magnificent view of the Massif des Cerces in the Thabor range on the edge of the Vanoise park! The common ski pass with the ski area of La Norma offers access to 135 km of slopes.
The Valfréjus ski resort offers something for every type of skier: experienced skiers can use their technique on the black pistes, which range in altitude from 2737 metres to 1550 metres. For novices and intermediates a single gondola ride heads straight to the main Plateau d’Arrondaz area (2222m), from which there’s a choice of tree-lined return runs back to the village.
Beginners will be keen to progress quickly, with some lovely blues to cruise down – like the scenic Lac and Combe runs from Punta Bagna which have smashing views over Italy. The longest piste in the area is the blue graded Jeu, which trails through the forest back to Valfrejus over 10km, passing a WWII bunker.
For an all-red descent, ski the Pas du Roc run from Punta Bagna, then take the Argentier down to Pas du Roc itself. Featuring narrow bits demanding concentration and wide open bits where you can really build up a rhythm, it’s a sunny and exhilarating run with gorgeous views.
Experts can tackle the black Punta Bagna run, and the Corniche which branches off from the blue Crete. In the Plateau d’Arrondaz area, the Souches trail has trees to the right and a drop on the left hand side.
Valfrejus is part of Eski-mo domain, which has 5 resorts and 335 km of unconnected slopes. If you buy a ski pass for the whole domain you will be able to visit Aussois, Bonneval, La Norma and Val Cenis. If you don’t have a car there is a shuttle bus. Departures are from Tuesday to Thursday, every day to different resort – check out the timetable.
Valfréjus village
Valfréjus, has been built in a traditional architecture (natural stone and wood). The center, with its restaurants, cafes and shops is car free and all facilities are all within walking distance (400m), ideal for the whole family. The centre of the village is arranged in a horseshoe shape around the run of the valley slope, so that guests can ski right up to the sun terraces of the cosy bars and cafés.
In Valfréjus there are various bars that invite you to enjoy après-ski! In the Bar "Rock n' Beer - Darjeeling Club", you can end the day in a relaxed atmosphere with rocking live music. The Celtic is an Irish pub in the village with a games room and a good selection of whiskies and draft beers. Genius Bar is popular for DJ’s and dancing, with outdoor seating for sunny days.
For those who like it a bit more cosy, a few restaurants with French and other traditional cuisine invite you to spend a pleasant evening. Food-wise, Piccolina is a favourite for pizzas (and when you’re this close to the Italian border, you can expect proper pizzas). Go to Le Petit Charmaix for fondue or Val Frais for more local cuisine.
The centre of Valfréjus offers a nice shopping arcade for shopping.
