The two chair lifts are now being retired after more than 50 years of service. From the winter season 2021/22 onwards they will be replaced by two state-of-the-art lifts that will take skiers up into the unique winter pleasures of Ski Arlberg even more quickly and in more comfort. The timings of the two new lifts are perfectly synchronised to effectively minimise waiting times.
The new Zugerbergbahn
With the new circulating lift with 10-person cabins, winter sports enthusiasts can get from Zug to Zugerberg in Arlberg in a matter of just a few minutes. In the process, panoramic windows offer a unique view onto the majesty of the world of Arlberg.
The top station of the new Zugerberg lift and the gondola station of the bottom station are completely underground, leaving you free to enjoy the beautiful scenery in its full glory. In addition, the area exposed to wind attack is significantly reduced.
The new top station is connected via an underground access to the Balmalp skiing restaurant. Even without skis or ski clothing, this means that guests have comfortable and dry access to events and festivities, which will also be able to take place in the evenings in the future thanks to the night-time operating licence for the ski lift.
The underground design also allows for optimum use of the available space. This has made it possible to build two new houses for employees at the gondola station of the bottom station, who can now get straight into the Zugerberg lift first thing in the morning and reach their workplace in just a few minutes.

The new Madlochbahn in Zürs
The new Madloch ski lift needs just five minutes to take its passengers to the top station on Madlochjoch at an altitude of 2,446 m above sea level. As well as this faster time, the new lift also offers much greater comfort. With protective hoods and seat heating to protect against the elements, winter sports enthusiasts arrive relaxed and warm, ready for their next descent.
The two new stations in the valley and at the top of the mountain are free-standing and are covered with a modern, lightweight steel and glass construction. The bottom station is on the opposite side of Lake Zürsersee. Its relocation has relieved pressure on a bottleneck and therefore made access to the ski lift easier. In addition, additional protection measures against avalanches have been added in the area of the top station.
Each of the 50 weather protection hoods of the Madloch ski lift is adorned on the back with the winners of the individual and team competitions in the “Bildstein Trophy”. In this way, these brave skiing heroes are not only given the recognition they deserve, but will no doubt also inspire future winners to face this unique challenge.
