Zermatt - Increased occupancy rates

The occupancy of beds in the Zermatt - Matterhorn destination increased slightly in the 2019 financial year compared to the previous year. This positive development is due to the fact that many guests traveled to the destination in the seasons as well.

In the 2019 financial year, the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination once again recorded an increase in overnight bookings. In the period between November 2018 and October 2019, there were more than 2.3 million overnight bookings (2,309,976), an increase of 4 per cent over the previous year. This increase was caused by available beds being booked throughout the year, bringing the destination one step closer to being a year-round destination. “Zermatt is thrilled to be an increasingly popular destination in the off-seasons, which are becoming more and more important,” said Paul-Marc Julen, Director of Zermatt Tourism. Occupancy rates are 63.6 per cent, which corresponds to an increase of around 3.5 per cent compared to the previous year. It is particularly encouraging that occupancy rates are similar in both summer and winter. Around two-thirds of overnight bookings are in hotels.

Switzerland – a key market

Switzerland remains the key market, making up around 36.6 per cent of overnight stays. It is followed by Germany (8.6 per cent), the US (7.5 per cent), the UK (5.5 per cent) and Japan (3.8 per cent).

Highly diversified

The Zermatt – Matterhorn destination has 7,797 hotel beds and 5,112 apartment beds. Each year, guests travel to the area from more than 70 countries. The destination is proud to welcome such a variety of guests.
