The ski resort of Canillo is a small, quiet resort in the Grandvalira ski area. Situated at a height of 1500m, this resort only has a few runs. However, it does have an 8 person chairlift giving easy access to the vast array of pistes and runs throughout the Grandvalira area.
Canillo ski resort - Grandvalira ski area
Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees, reaching an altitude of 2640m. There are over 210km of ski runs across 6 interlinked areas served by 64 lifts. The ski area is divided into seven different sectors: Canillo, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa, Encamp, El Tarter, Peretol and Grau Roig.
This sector can be found in the town of Canillo, a peaceful, mountain village without the hectic rush of traffic. It has a cable car that can carry up to 8 people to one of the most outstanding natural settlements, the Valle del Forn.
The ski slopes in the Canillo sector are perfect for families and beginners who want to come and enjoy their first contact with the snow thanks to its easy slopes. More experienced skiers can still stay in Canillo, as it has interlinked access to the Grandvalira ski area which has slopes for all skiing and snowboarding abilities.
Canillo village
Canillo is the capital city of the region with the same name. Here you'll find a great number of Andorra's traditional old mountain houses, the "borda", many of which include restaurants offering traditional cuisine. After a good day of sports, you can taste some traditional Andorran dishes. Why not try "Tupi" cheese? This regional speciality is made in a jug and left to mature with liquor and garlic.
Canillo is not far from Grandvalira's après-ski centre: Pas de la Casa. But you can also have a good night out in Canillo's various bars. The pub "Camping Pla" regularly organises parties, which are especially popular among the locals.
You can spend all remaining energy at the "Palau de Gel", a sports and community centre, playing tennis or squash, skating, and swimming. Also recommended is the Caldea Spa, Europe's largest thermal spa, which is located on a natural hot spring, just a few kilometres from Canillo ski resort.
Those who prefer to take in cultural highlights will find a few medieval sights in Canillo, like its church or the old mill.
Make sure you still have some space left in your suitcases: thanks to the low taxes, the region is a shopping paradise!
