Hinterglemm is located in the Glemm Valley, which is within the Zell am See region in the Austrian Kitzbühel Alps. The ski resort is within 90 minutes' drive of Salzburg.
Saalbach - Hinterglemm ski area
Together with Saalbach, Hinterglemm’s closely connected neighbour, and nearby Fieberbrunn, and Leogang, Hinterglemm forms one of Europe’s most exciting ski circuses. With 270km of excellent runs, this attractive village at the end of the Glemm Valley is a skier's dream.
Saalbach - Hinterglemm skiing
Beginners and intermediates can glide across wide, meticulously groomed blue and red runs, the adrenaline seekers have their playground cut out with challenging descents.
Beginners - Both Saalbach and Hinterglemm have good nursery slopes at village level with those in Hiterglemm being slightly more favourable. Beginners then have a good range of blue runs to progress on to in this resort.
Intermediates - Virtually everywhere is suitable for intermediate skiers. Intermediates will also enjoy the wide range of runs back down to the village, be it Saalbach or Hinterglemm. Even Saalbach’s black runs aren’t as difficult as those in other resorts. For the cautious intermediate, we suggest heading to the Kohlmaiskopf, Bernkogel, Reiterkogel, Reichkendikopf and Spieleckkogel peaks and ridges which will provide some greta sking whilst avoiding some of the more difficult skiing across the valley. Intermediates will also find the ski down into Leogang a real treat.
Advanced - There are some good opportunities for seriously steep skiing across the valley on the north side such as the long black run from Schattberg Ost back to Saalbach. After some fresh snow, there are some sizeable pockets of off piste, particularly on the Schattberg, Zwolferkogel and Asitz. The dotted, diamond orange runs that you see on the piste map signals that they are approved off piste runs. They are worth skiing in good conditions.
Off-piste - On powder days Hinterglemm is renowned for its excellent off-piste, making it a fantastic destination for dedicated freeriders. Largely south-facing, the slopes of Hinterglemm are perfectly placed for capturing the sun and enjoying the absolutely outstanding scenery. Then take a look at these slopes: Amsel on the Bernkogel Ost, towards Spielberghaus, Marxen on Schattberg, Dillinger Eck towards Jausern, Stemmerkogel West on the Schattberg, Spieleck on Hochalm Pasture.
Around Fieberbrunn, on the Tyrolean side of the ski circus, you will discover magnificent deep snow slopes. The area is known for abundant snow and thus offers higher accumulations.
There is a small park in Hinterglemm centre, located just above the VIP bar at the bottom of the Westgipfelbahn gondola.
The apres ski scene is fairly lively (as in Saalbach) but there is less noisy nightlife - perfect for families preferring a quieter atmosphere, and good night's sleep.
Hinterglemm village
Although there are fewer shops, bars and hotels than in Saalbach there are enough to make for a lively atmosphere. In fact, Hinterglemm is generally more geared and marketed towards family skiing compared to its more raucous, party orientated neighbour.
