The Hintertux ski resort is located in the Zillertaler Valley above Hintertux Glacier. It is the only ski resort in Austria open 365 days a year. The skiing goes up to 3250m and it is one of the best areas for summer skiing and snowboarding.
Hintertux ski resort - Zillertal ski area
Located high in the Zillertal Alps, Hintertux village sits at 1,500m, with the highest ski lift reaching 3,250m. The Hintertux Glacier receives its name from the glaciers of the Gefrorene-Wand-Kees, also called the Tuxer Ferner, and the nearby Riepenkees at the top of the Tuxertal, a side valley of the Zillertal in the Austrian state of Tirol. The ski area in Hintertux comprises three main sections: Sommerbergalm, Tuxer Fernerhaus, and Gefrorene Wand, all accessible from the base station.
From November-December onwards, skiers can enjoy 60 kilometers of glacier slopes (60 km of groomed pistes and about 10 km of ski routes with 21 lifts), at altitudes of up to 3,250 m, of all levels of difficulty.
In winter, Hintertux Glacier unites with the Tux: Eggalm &, Rastkogel Bahnen, Finkenberger Almbahnen, Mayrhofen Penken and Hippach Hornberg to form the most snow-sure region of the Zillertal, the Ski- & Glacier World Zillertal 3000, with 204 kilometers of perfectly groomed ski slopes and 65 lifts.
The Zillertal Superskipass is on all 548 kilometres of perfectly groomed slopes and on 180 lifts in the four large ski areas (Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen, Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000).
Hintertux skiing
There is only one main gondola that one can take that gets you from the villages into the main ski area and that is the 10-minute ride up the Gletscherbus1 big gondola.
Hintertux has a reputation as a ski resort for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, but it also features a selection of gentle slopes and wide runs suitable for beginners.
Two primary nursery slopes, located at the base station and Sommerbergalm, provide an ideal learning environment. As beginners gain confidence, they can progress to designated beginner areas like the green runs around Sommerbergalm. The Sommerbergalm area is excellent for lower-intermediate skiers, with numerous wide, smooth blues. It’s worth noting that the easier runs in Hintertux are typically at higher altitudes, with the runs becoming more demanding as you ski back down to the base station. Therefore, beginners may prefer to take the gondola back down.
Intermediate skiers can enjoy a good selection of blue and red runs, offering a mix of gentle slopes and more challenging terrain. The slopes are generally wide and open, providing plenty of space to practice and improve skiing techniques. One of favourite runs for intermediate skiers is the red run from Gefrorene Wand to Tuxer Fernerhaus, a thrilling descent with stunning views. At 12 km in length, you'll overcome an altitude difference of 1,750 meters!
Schlegeis – Another challenging and scenic red run that leads down from the Schlegeis glacier area. It offers long stretches perfect for confident intermediates. The Spannagelabfahrt - It is a challenging red run, offering a mix of thrilling descents for advanced skiers. Named after the nearby Spannagel Cave.
Just below the Tuxerjochhaus one of the highlights of the ski area begins, the seven kilometer long downhill run "Schwarze Pfanne" (no. 1) - The red slope leading to the main Hintertux cable car station at the bottom has some easier sections but is quite steep and becomes very narrow in places. At the end of the day, it can become a frustrating last-ditch effort.
Hintertux Glacier has several black slopes that are perfect for expert skiers. Taking the far left run at the top of the Gefrorene Wand lifts will lead skiers to the top of the Schlegeis chairlift and the black and red runs.
Black slope Schlegeis (no. 6) is intended for expert skiers. It features steep gradients, technical sections, and often requires advanced skiing skills and experience. Durchstich (2a) - It is part of a black run and known for its steep, narrow passage that requires advanced skiing skills.
The ski routes "Lärmstange", "Waldabfahrt" and the "Schwarzen Pfanne" are challenging runs that demand dexterity and top condition.
Snowpark - Since two decades Betterpark up on Hintertux glacier is the first choice for riders from all over the world to start into the new winter season in early autumn. Betterpark Hintertux is known for offering lines and features for all riding levels, freestylers – no matter if beginner, advanced or pro – will have fun at the park.
In Betterpark Hintertux, you will find everyone from the Kids Shred Crew, with some as young as three, coached by snowboard legends like Gigi Rüf and Steve Gruber, to rookies, amateurs, and stars of the scene.
Hintertux village
The town of Hintertux at 1500 metres is the last town at the very end of the Tux Valley which branches off from the Zillertal Valley at Mayrhofen. The village of Hintertux is pretty small, and spread between two areas about 1km apart, however, due to its fame and the glacier it is a lively little place. In Hintertux, you will find only one small grocery store: MiniMarkt and several sporting goods stores.
In the village, Alte Hütte serves delicious Tyrolean specialities, while Kleine Tenne offers a more international menu. Try the local Zillertal beer at the cosy Kleine Tenne. In the evening, almost everyone eats in their hotels.
If it’s apres-ski you want, then you really ought to be Mayrhofen, a little further down the Zillertal – which rocks from 3pm until the small hours of the morning. The villages around Hintertux at this end of the valley are small and mostly family-oriented.
