Die Tauplitz is the ski area in Styria, in the heart of Austria: the confluence of 43 piste kilometers between 900 and 1.965 m above sea level, on three mountains, with the Tauplitzalm as the hub for all the action. Tauplitz is a medium-sized ski resort offering plenty ski slopes for advanced skiers and snowboarders.
Tauplitz ski resort
The ski area is located over this town. The four seater chairlifts Tauplitz I and II (four kilometers long) take you from Tauplitz to the Tauplitzalm (1650 meters above sea level). The pistes of Die Tauplitz mostly lie above the tree line. 43 piste kilometers spread across three mountains – the Mitterstein, Lawinenstein, Schneiderkogel – with the Tauplitzalm in between. The pistes also treat you to impressive panoramic views of the hundreds of surrounding mountain peaks.
Spacious pistes have something to offer every skier: including sporty, extended runs next to the Mitterstein 8-passenger gondola for winter sports fans with the necessary strength and expertise. For their part, the broad sweeping pistes on the Lawinenstein and Schneiderkogel provide ideal conditions for gentler carving experiences – for families and everyone who wants to take a more laid-back approach to their skiing.
In the Hollhausmulde, you will discover everything families and children need for a beautiful day of skiing: 4 lifts, easy and intermediate pistes as well as great refreshment opportunities. The natural setting in a hollow makes this family ski area easy to navigate and easy to keep an eye on.
The ‘Schneebären Card’ links Ausseerland-Salzkammergut, the Gesäuse National Park and the holiday region of Schladming-Dachstein. State-of-the-art lift facilities, a total of 128 terrific kilometres of pistes and plenty of freeride routes are what make the Schneebären stand out (ski areas ‘Die Tauplitz’, Ski Riesenalm, Planneralm, Loser Altaussee and Kaiserau).
Off piste
The Tauplitz ski area is one of the snowiest areas in the Styrian Alps. Records indicate snow depths as much as 4 meters – with fresh powder, magical firn and finest pillows for your creative lines. Another major selling point of Tauplitz is the potential for off-piste fun: almost every run marked on the piste map seems to have been designed to give access to tantalising un-pisted terrain.
The area which surrounds Die Tauplitz is essentially an enormous ski playground for freeriders: On the Mitterstein, Lawinenstein and Schneiderkogel, on the Grosser and Kleiner Süd, on the Ramsanger-Hang and the Tauplitzalm, where everything connects together, you will find lines that are obvious and hidden – with a broad spectrum of length and steepness.
Apres ski
Numerous ski huts, mountain inns and restaurants right next to the pistes invite you to stop by for a bite to eat. The dining establishments on Die Tauplitz will also win you over with their location: Many serve you scenery, others beautiful sunsets with views of the Dachstein. Some boast sunny terraces and specialize in putting some healthy color in your face while you eat.
For a great bite to eat after a strenuous but fun day on the slopes, guests are encouraged to try Hollhaus - OAV Berggasthof, Almwirtschaft Grazerhütte and Schöni Alm.
Tauplitz village
Tauplitz, with its approx. 1,000 inhabitants, is located in the Styrian Salzkammergut, at an altitude of approx. 896 m. The valley is overlooked by the towering Grimming massif (2,351 m). Already 100 years ago, skiing was a thing in Tauplitz. In 1911, the first Styrian Ski Championship took place here. Tauplitzalm-Dorf (1,600 m) is uniquely located on a sunny plateau and makes for a beautiful holiday destination thanks to it's idyllic, car-free centre with some good restaurants and cosy huts.
Tauplitz is a traffic-free resort in the winter. The village, and the valley stations for the ski area, are just over a kilometre from the station, but if you don't want to walk there is a free ski bus to and from the station.
In Tauplitz, while the après-ski scene might not be as bustling as in larger resorts, there are still several popular bars and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious meals and drinks in a cozy atmosphere:
Gasthof Berghof: This traditional Austrian gasthof offers hearty local dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's known for its delicious regional cuisine and friendly service.
Restaurant Sturzhahn: Located near the slopes, this restaurant offers a mix of Austrian and international cuisine. It's a convenient place to grab a bite while skiing or after a day on the slopes.
Bars:
Die Tauplitzerin: Apart from après-ski, this bar is also popular for its relaxed atmosphere and selection of drinks. It's a great place to unwind in the evenings.
Hausbergstüberl: Not just an après-ski spot, but also a cozy bar to enjoy a drink and socialize after skiing.
